Sakae is downtown Nagoya: department stores, underground malls, the TV Tower and, packed in between, a lot of live music. Touring bands, local punk, jazz, oldies and idols all play within a short walk of Sakae Station, which makes it the easiest place to start if you want to see live music in Nagoya.

From a firebreak to downtown

Sakae began as a fire precaution. After the Great Manji Fire of 1660 burned through half of the castle town, one street was widened from about 5 to 27 metres to stop the next fire spreading. That street, Hirokoji, became the crossroads the district grew around.

The same idea shaped Sakae again after the Second World War, when the city laid out Hisaya-odori Park as a wide green strip through the centre. The 180 metre Nagoya TV Tower went up in the park in 1954, one of the oldest TV towers in Japan, and the glass roof of Oasis 21 followed in 2002. In 2020 the park reopened after a full renewal, with lawns, cafes and shops along its length.

Today Sakae is where Nagoya shops by day and goes out at night. Department stores line the main streets, shopping malls run underneath them, and Nishiki 3-chome, the city's bar and nightlife quarter, starts on the west side. The Higashiyama and Meijo subway lines meet at Sakae Station, so it is an easy ride from Nagoya Station.

Sakae's music history

In June 1989, Nagoya CLUB QUATTRO opened on the 8th floor of the new Parco East building, the second QUATTRO after Shibuya. It has stuck to street culture and quality music of any genre ever since.

In 2006 the radio station ZIP-FM started SAKAE SP-RING, a circuit festival where one wristband gets you into every venue. The first edition, on 31 May 2006, ran across 6 venues, including QUATTRO and Diamond Hall. By its 20th year in 2026 it had grown to 18 venues across Sakae and Shin-Sakae and several hundred artists over two days, billed as the largest live circuit in the Tokai region.

Sakae even gave its name to a group: SKE48, formed in July 2008, takes its three letters from Sakae and performs at its own theatre in the Sunshine Sakae building.

What makes Sakae different

Many live music areas lean towards one sound. Sakae has a bit of everything, all close together. Bands on tour play QUATTRO and NAGOYA ReNY limited, while smaller rooms like Live DOXY, TIGHT ROPE and Red Dragon keep the local rock, punk and hip hop scene going night after night.

Then there are the places you would not find in a typical live house district. KENTO'S Nagoya has oldies played live by a house band. SakaeBase runs open mic nights where you can walk in and play. World Idol Republic, which opened in August 2026, is built for idol shows. And for jazz, MILES is a live bar tucked into a building in Nishiki.

Beyond Sakae

Some of Nagoya's longest running venues are one or two stops away. Shin-Sakae, just east, is home to HeartLand, which opened in March 1984, CLUB ROCK'N'ROLL, supporting local bands since 1992, and Diamond Hall.

Further east in Imaike, Huck Finn opened in the early 1980s, partly modelled on New York's CBGB, as Nagoya's live house scene took off. To the south in Osu, Electric Lady Land has been running since 1977.

8,572+ live shows listed right now across Japan | Sakae packs halls, small rock clubs, an oldies bar, an idol theatre and jazz into a few walkable blocks. Its history, its music and where to go next.
