Francesca Han, a pianist based in the south of France, is finally releasing a recording that has been nine years in the making. There is much to be discovered with the passage of time—a process often referred to as “aging” or “maturing”—but in the case of a recording, the sound itself remains unchanged. Over the past nine years, many things have happened, and it is we, the listeners, who have “aged,” causing our way of listening to change.
Around 2016, I performed with Francesca for the first time at Shimokitazawa APOLLO—a venue that’s indispensable to any discussion of Tokyo’s underground music scene. Her tenacious touch and her low-center-of-gravity, rich sound offered a completely new and refreshing experience. After performing together as a trio with Shun, we went into the studio and recorded this new album. Afterward, Francesca moved to the south of France, and as the circumstances surrounding us all changed—including the COVID-19 pandemic—this recording ended up shelved… but now, a full nine years later, it has finally seen the light of day.
This is not only a one-night-only concert to celebrate the release of her new album, but also a miraculous reunion concert. We’re absolutely thrilled to once again welcome the exceptional pianist Francesca Han to Tokyo. Don’t miss it!
