Needless to say, Danny, the pianist, is a brilliant musician who has consistently been a first-call artist on the New York jazz scene. His beautiful touch, technical skill, and sense of swing are, of course, top-notch in the world of jazz, and having performed and recorded with countless New York jazz giants, he is undoubtedly a remarkable jazz pianist whose name will go down in jazz history.
Vladimir, a drummer, lives in Vienna—the city of music—and is a wonderful drummer who performs throughout Europe. While many drummers can’t read or write music, he composes academic and melodic pieces, and we plan to feature his music in this trio as well.
Japanese jazz has also undergone its own unique musical evolution since before the war, continuing to the present day. With jazz clubs and jazz cafes located throughout the country, and jazz festivals held annually in various regions, Japan is a rare country where jazz enjoys support from a wide range of age groups; in recent years, Japanese jazz has also been gaining attention from international tourists.
Both Danny and Vladimir heard Kanamori’s music—which has been making waves in Japan—and this project came about from their shared desire to exchange musical perspectives.
Jazz is a genre of music that isn’t bound by sheet music; each performer freely expresses their individuality through improvisation. At the same time, it is a form of music in which performers communicate with one another to create something new on the spot. When people from different cultural backgrounds bring their individualities together, respect one another, and create new music, that is international cultural exchange in its truest sense.
A cross-border collaboration between a pianist active on the front lines of the New York jazz scene, a European drummer deeply influenced by diverse immigrant cultures and classical music, and one of Japan’s most accomplished bassists will take place here at Shinjuku Pit Inn, the Hall of Fame of jazz!
