21st: Part Four / Komatcha Klezmer “Uta to Uta”
Nozomi Matsunaga's song is a peaceful, heartfelt breeze blowing onto the island. Welcoming Komatcha Klezmer, whose band sound has grown ever more mature, they play and frolic in the garden of freedom.
As Pit Inn celebrates its 60th anniversary, I find myself reflecting on my own connection with the venue. My first appearance was around '78. Invited by Yosuke Yamashita, it was the “Seikatsu Kōjyō Iinkai Orchestra.” Since then, I've been involved in so many different ways. D.U.B., Shakushain, NAZO, Shin-Okubo Gentlemen, Betsuni Nanmo Klezmer, Komatcha Klezmer, KIKI BAND. As a member, I've been part of the Masahiko Togashi Unit, Sax Workshop, Eastasia, Fumio Itabashi MIX Dynamite, etc.
Of course, those bands are part of it, but in other sessions, I've been allowed even more freedom to do whatever I please. Musicians from overseas, numerous singers, poetry and dance, improvisation, Dangdut with Kiyohiko Semba, and the cabaret that continues to this day...
The world's situation keeps getting worse, and freedom keeps shrinking. Places where you can make music however you want are actually incredibly precious places, precious times. Pit-In, starting from jazz, keeps pushing forward those who walk toward freedom from there, supporting them all the way.
“Petit Ohshigoto” is one form and symbol of that.
