Akira Sakata SOS Profile 2026
More than half a century has passed since he joined the Yosuke Yamashita Trio in 1972, and Akira Sakata, now in his 80s, continues to perform globally. After repeatedly forming and disbanding various groups, he has launched his new band, “Akira Sakata SOS.” The members are Akira Sakata, a leading figure in free jazz; Nana Omori, a pianist whose work bridges free jazz and contemporary music; and Manabu Sakata (Akira Sakata’s son), a drummer active across genres. The three first performed together in 2017 and subsequently began performing as “Akira Sakata COCODA” after adding Shinobu Kawai (bass) to the lineup.
In 2023, they released the CD 'Withered Sunflowers', which was well received. Starting with their 2024 Hokkaido tour, they also began performing as a trio. In 2025, they released Akira Sakata SOS’s first album, 'In a Sentimental Mood', on CD and have been actively performing at festivals and on tours nationwide. They’ve been well-received not only by longtime fans but also by people of all ages and genders who had never been exposed to free jazz before (reactions ranging from surprise to roars of laughter). In 2026, they plan to release the LP “In a Sentimental Mood”—mixed and mastered by Jim O’Rourke, just like the CD—and perform live across the country! “Just watch our unpredictable performances as if they were scenery passing by a train window,” says Sakata.
